Optional Telegram Setup

Bonus station - Gateway. Time: 30-45 min if the room is ready. Pass when gateway status is healthy and you can message Hermes. Skip this if the core CLI path is not stable yet.

What this is

Telegram gateway lets you talk to Hermes from a messaging app instead of only the terminal.

Why it matters

This can turn Hermes into a phone-accessible control center. It also adds more moving parts, so it is optional in Hermes 101 and a strong candidate for Hermes 102.

What to do

Only start after:

  • Hermes works in CLI.
  • Your model/API setup works.
  • You understand API key and bot token safety.
  • The facilitator says the room has time.

You also need a Telegram bot token from @BotFather before Hermes can connect to Telegram.

Hard rule: skip Telegram if less than 30 minutes remain or if most learners have not completed model setup.

Telegram bot tokens are secrets. Do not paste them into public chats, screenshots, slides, or GitHub.

Common mistakes

  • Trying Telegram before Hermes works in CLI.
  • Sharing bot tokens.
  • Treating gateway setup as required graduation.
  • Spending the whole workshop debugging the bonus station.
