What Is Hermes?
Station 2 — Mental model. Time: 8 min. Pass when you can explain Hermes without saying "it is just ChatGPT."
What this is
Hermes is an AI agent environment made by Nous Research. When it is set up, it can chat, use tools, work with files, remember useful context, and connect to other services.
Use the diagram above as your map:
- Hermes is the operator.
- Model is the brain that thinks.
- Provider is the platform that serves the model.
- Tools are the actions Hermes can take.
- Proof is the output or check you keep.
Why it matters
A normal chatbot only replies. An agent can take steps, use a tool, check the result, and keep going toward your task. That is more powerful — which is exactly why the safety habits in the next stations matter.
What to do
Say it in one sentence, using your own task:
Copy prompt
Hermes is useful to me because it can help with [task] using [a model] and [selected tools].Remember the honest rule:
Reference
Capabilities depend on setup, provider, enabled tools, and permissions.Common mistakes
- Thinking the model and Hermes are the same thing.
- Expecting Hermes to be safe with private documents by default.
- Assuming every tool is switched on — only enabled tools work.
