Controlled tools

How Hermes reaches external tools

Composio and MCP bridge Hermes to selected tools only. Today's goal is controlled action, not unlimited access.

Connect Tools with Composio

Station 7 — Controlled tools. Time: 15 min. Pass when you see Hermes use one connected tool safely.

What this is

Hermes becomes more powerful when it can use tools. Composio is one way to connect Hermes to many app and tool actions without building each integration yourself. The diagram above shows the bridge.

  • Composio is a tool connector for agents.
  • MCP is a universal plug that lets Hermes talk to external tool servers.

Why it matters

Tools are what make an agent more than a chatbot. But broad access is risky. The goal today is controlled action, not unlimited access — Hermes should only see the tools your facilitator connects.

What to do

Watch your facilitator run one safe, approved tool. For today's room:

  • Prefer search / read / draft tools — low risk.
  • Read what Hermes is about to do before you approve it.
  • No send, delete, payment, or admin actions in a beginner demo.

Keep the honest rule:

Common mistakes

  • Expecting Hermes to connect your real Gmail or Slack in a beginner session.
  • Approving an action without reading it first.
  • Assuming a connected tool is safe just because it is available.
